An old man lies dying. Confined to bed in his living room, he sees the walls around him begin to collapse, the windows come loose from their sashes, and the ceiling plaster fall off in great chunks, showering him with a lifetime of debris: newspaper clippings, old photographs, wool jackets, rusty tools, and the mangled brass works of antique clocks. Soon, the clouds from the sky above plummet down on top of him, followed by the stars, till the black night covers him like a shroud. He is hallucinating, in death throes from cancer and kidney failure. A methodical repairer of clocks, he is now finally released from the usual constraints of time and memory to rejoin his father, an epileptic, itinerant peddler, whom he had lost seven decades before. In his return to the wonder and pain of his impoverished childhood in the backwoods of Maine, he recovers a natural world that is at once indifferent to man and inseparable from him, menacing and awe inspiring. Heartbreaking and life affirming, TINKERS is an elegiac meditation on love, loss, and the fierce beauty of nature.

When Jack Taylor blew town at the end of The Guards his alcoholism was a distant memory and sober dreams of a new life in London were shining in his eyes. In the opening pages of The Killing of the Tinkers, Jack's back in Galway a year later with a new leather jacket on his back, a pack of smokes in his pocket, a few grams of coke in his waistband, and a pint of Guinness on his mind. So much for new beginnings. Before long he's sunk into his old patterns, lifting his head from the bar only every few days, appraising his surroundings for mere minutes and then descending deep into the alcoholic, drug-induced fugue he prefers to the real world. But a big gypsy walks into the bar one day during a moment of Jack's clarity and changes all that with a simple request. Jack knows the look in this man's eyes, a look of hopelessness mixed with resolve topped off with a quietly simmering rage; he's seen it in the mirror. Recognizing a kindred soul, Jack agrees to help him, knowing but not admitting that getting involved is going to lead to more bad than good. But in Jack Taylor's world bad and good are part and parcel of the same lost cause, and besides, no one ever accused Jack of having good sense. Ken Bruen wowed critics and readers alike when he introduced Jack Taylor in The Guards; he'll blow them away with The Killing of the Tinkers, a novel of gritty brilliance that cements Bruen's place among the greats of modern crime fiction.

2009 is the centenary of the death of major early twentieth-century Irish playwright J.M. Synge, whose work constitutes some of the most influential but misunderstood representations of Travellers ('tinkers'), members of a minority that has existed on Ireland's margins for centuries. This volume is the first examination of the cultural history of the Traveller to trace that figure back to medieval Irish historiography and English Renaissance literature and forwardto contemporary US screen depictions of the allied Irish-American Traveler. It constitutes both an accessible and landmark study of a critically-neglected community and an important reassessment ofthe legacy of Synge and a number of other twentieth-century Irish and British writers, both major and less well-known, who also depicted the tinker.

The Tinkers Trade, is a brilliantly told tale of the adventures, love and strength of Rolf, the tinker. In their time, the tinkers were masters of metallurgy and all things mechanical; from repairing a broken ax or a pot to a gun or clock. This fast paced novel tells of Tinker and his companion Sonja, a blaze faced mule, as they plodded the Appalachian trails and byways; buying, selling and administering as needed. The tinker was sometimes a doctor, a keeper of the peace and even a matchmaker. Very importantly, he was a bearer of news between those far flung homesteads and settlements. Occasionally he was accosted by bandits and brigands who he was obliged to teach “the error of their ways”. In his travels he met, Molly, the love of his life. They were married and cut a swath out of the wilderness for a homestead. Standing shoulder to shoulder the two defended it against all who sought to destroy it. Together, they nurtured the homestead into a settlement which developed into a prosperous town that honors their memories still today.

Plying his trade through the towns and villages, a good-natured travelling tinker and his family present an unusual sight. The family’s cow is harnessed between the shafts of the cart, and Tom Tinker sings as he leads her, closely accompanied by his wife and daughter, a black Labrador, a white cat and a flat-footed goose. They appear content with life, but inwardly all have an unfulfilled dream – that of having their own little farm. One night they encounter an impoverished old lady for whom they perform a kindly deed. Within minutes of her departure, they find themselves enshrouded by a strange mist which billows into the clearing, then disappears. Unbeknown to them, it has mystical powers. Their way of life is dramatically changed when, next day, their dream becomes reality. However, their happiness is short-lived and the dream is transformed into a nightmare when the jealousy and greed of Old Whiskers, their bad-tempered ogre of a neighbour, and his sly accomplice bring them to the brink of disaster and ruin.
